It’s Not a Waste

Matthew 26:6-13

This is taking place not long before the Crucifixion of Jesus.

He is with the disciples and a woman comes in with a box.

This is Mary of Bethany coming in with an alabaster box of very precious ointment.

This ointment was about a year’s wages. It was very expensive. Mary knew that, and she had one desire for using this ointment: to anoint Jesus.

When she poured it on His head, the disciples got upset, pointing out how valuable it was and other ways it could have been used.

We do this, don’t we? Judging someone else’s worship because we think we know better. Worse yet, they told her it was a waste. I don’t know about you, but I probably would have been upset if someone told me I was being wasteful when I was just trying to worship Jesus.

This ointment was precious. To purchase it, she had to work and save a lot.

This ointment represents her work and her wealth.

As she’s anointing Jesus, Mary was not thinking that she was wasting her work or her wealth. She was happy to be able to do this for Him. She had an “I get to” attitude. This was definitely not a waste.

This was an act of sincere worship. Our worship is not a waste, either. When our concern is to honor and glorify Jesus, then our worship is not a waste.

Serving God is never a waste, even if we do not see results immediately.

May we all use our work, our wealth, and our worship for the honor and glory of God.

Stay in the Word, stay close to the Shepherd, and let Him lead you in paths of righteousness.

With Hope in His Service,

Heather
