I’m seeing so many posts and memes for 2021. I am sure you are as well. It seems that everyone is impatiently waiting for the new year to arrive. After what we have experienced in 2020, I definitely understand! I like the expectancy of a new year, new resolutions and goals, new adventures, and changes that may come. It is exciting.
However, I’d like to remind you of a few things.
If 2020 and COVID-19 have taught us anything, more than ever, we’re reminded that time is not guaranteed. “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” James 4:13-15 KJV
I want to encourage you not to waste the last days of 2020. Each day we are given is an opportunity to do God’s work. It’s an opportunity to share the Gospel, to point your kids to Jesus, to pray, to serve.
“Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;” Matthew 9:37 KJV
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalms 90:12 KJV
“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalms 118:24 KJV
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 KJV
Today is the day God has given you. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. The Lord could return at any moment. Do not waste today.
I am all for plans and goals for the future. I believe God is okay with that. But we must be sure that our mindset is “Lord willing” and not let those take our focus off of today.
Our marriages need us to be present today.
Our children need us to be present today.
Our church needs us to be serving today.
Not absently waiting for the future.
Our problems and fears and circumstances will not magically change at midnight when the New Year’s Ball drops in New York City. Do not end this year with unrealistic expectations of 2021.
Regardless of what the end of 2020 holds, or what 2021 will bring, we have some truths to hold on to.
- “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8 KJV. We know Jesus never changes.
- “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 KJV. We know we have an invitation to pray
- “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalms 118:24 KJV. We know that every day is made by God and we can rejoice.
There are many more things I could add to this list. I encourage you to get into God’s Word and find more of His promises that you can rest in.
With Hope in His Service
